COLORS
Colors are everywhere, and how they are used in your photography can make an outstanding picture or a horrible mess. Colors also represent emotion, for instance red is well known for love, romance, lust, and has a high level of energy. Blue is known for calm, relaxing, and peaceful. Green represents life and even money, so the use of color can be a very powerful element in your images.
There are two basic types of colors – additive and subtractive. Painting, photography and printing use subtractive colors and in those subtractive colors you start off with 3 primary colors of red, blue and yellow. Then from those colors you get your secondary and so the cycle continues with infinite colors. Colors can then be categorized as warm and cool, as well as complimentary which is where colors are opposite of each other on the color wheel. For instance, fire is a warm color, and blue is a cool color, so in photography, you could have a bright, warm “glowing” sunset against a blue to indigo sky which would be cool, therefore you would have contrasting or “complementary” colors in your photos. In the photos below, enjoy the warm and cool colors are represented in the image from the hot lusty velvety red rose and the flames of the fire to the cool green northern lights with the coo purple passion flower. |
