Introduction
Faculty will learn ways to incorporate photography into areas of their curriculum to facilitate student learning through imagery in their classroom. Participants will create a graphical documentary using digital photography to represent an issue, topic or social issue. Multiple applications and technologies will be used in this workshop. Participants will expand their knowledge of the use of graphical imagery used in their project. Faculty will gain knowledge to take this activity back to their classroom to engage students learning in their subject area.

Faculty will learn ways to incorporate photography into areas of their curriculum to facilitate student learning through imagery in their classroom. Participating faculty will leave the seminar with a better understanding of how to create a graphical documentary using digital photography to represent an issue, topic or social issue. Participates will also learn how to use basic office applications to aid in this creation, from PowerPoint to basic photo editing applications. Faculty will gain knowledge to take this activity back to their classroom to engage students learning in their subject area.
Appropriate Applications:
Participates can choose what applications they prefer to work with. Participants will need to have chosen applications prior to the workshop and have them downloaded and installed on their laptops. GIMP will be use in the session for basic photo editing: Scale an Image, crop in Image, rotate or flip an image, convert image to B/W, change color(Sepia) tone.

Photography Principles & Elements: The basic building blocks in photography
Elements:
- Line: A mark made by a moving point. Has greater length than width. Directs the eye; can be horizontal, vertical, diagonal, curvy, zig-zag, etc. Can be actual obvious lines or the borders or edges of shapes.
- Shape/Form: Shapes are 2-Dimensional and flat. Forms are 3-Dimensional with height, width and depth. Can be geometric, (Square, triangle, circle, etc.) Can be organic (Leaves, humans, puddles, etc). Used to create a sense of space and substance.
- Space: The area used or unused in a composition. Positive space is the area the objects/subject takes up. Negative space is the area around, under, through and between. Depth gives the photo a 3-dimensional feeling. Foreground, Middle ground, and Background
- Value: Black & White and all the grays in between. Sepia tone, Dark to Light, Can add drama and impact to composition.
- Texture: The surface quality. The look and feel of an object- rough, smooth, bumpy, slimy, sharp, etc. Offers a sense of sight and sense of touch involved.
- Color: HUE- Primary, Secondary, Intermediates. Use color schemes to enhance appeal or make impact.
- Emphasis or a focal point in a composition refers to developing points of interest to pull the viewers eye to important parts of the body of the work.
- Balance is a sense of stability in the image. Balance can be created by repeating same shapes and by creating a feeling of equal weight.
- Unity is seen in photography when all the parts equal a whole.
- Contrast refers to the opposites and differences in the work. By using a variety different shapes, textures, colors and values in your images.
- Movement/Rhythm adds excitement to your work by showing action and directing the viewer’s eye throughout the picture plane. Rhythm is a type of movement that repeats shapes and colors. Alternating lights and darks also give a sense of rhythm.
- Graphical imagery: giving a clear and effective picture
- Photo editor application: An image editing application for digital photos. It is used to crop and touch up photos, as well as organize them into albums and slide shows. (Photoshop, Gimp, Paint, etc.)
- Photostory: A story illustrated with sequential photographs in the manner of a comic strip. *Also is a free application by Microsoft to create a visual story from digital photos.

- Adobe Photoshop: *Those who have access to this and are knowledgeable on how to use this software are welcome to use this application.
