Initial Reflections: Challenges & lessons.
Reflections: Project 1: Challenges, Lessons, Personal & Professional, Oh My!
Building a website is not new to me, I have built several in the past, however that was before an easy to use web template. My first website that I built was all by code from 2 courses: Web Authoring I & II when I was working on my first master’s degree in the early 2004-05, so building a website from scratch without templates while using straight HTML & java script code was quite the challenge.
My second round of building a website was for my father’s antique car club. I build this site using Microsoft Publisher, then published the pages and pages of code into GoDaddy, where I paid to host the site as well as register the domain. That was almost more f a challenge in working with the FTP sites; uploading files and pictures of cars. The hosting from GoDaddy was actually difficult in the earlier years until they made some changes and it because easier to navigate.
Flash forward to Weebly and this assignment. Wow, so much easier once I got pages in place. My first mistake was just jumping in and trying to use Weebly without any instruction. I was able to figure most of all ot it out, however, the template I choes to start with was under a “store” and I don’t have a store or eCommerce. So, I conceded to use the Weebly chat feature, and as I was on chat, I realized I used a store template to get started. So, I literally just deleted the “home” page, and then the template was working just fine. I did finally pull up a Youtube video on using Weebly, just to avoid any future time consuming mistakes.
The biggest challenge about creating this particular website was locating images that I have taken to showcase the various photography elements, principles and concepts. I have literally 1000’s of images, some outstanding, some typical and some horrible. So, that was honestly the most time consuming part of this entire project. I did try to find a different images for each portion of that, so we are talking about 100 different images! So, looking through the thousands of digital photos that I have taken in recent years, to find 100 that I wanted to showcase, was the most exhausting part of the project – so far.
In conclusion, I'm looking forward to seeing how this Weebly site will unfold and additionally I will learn from incorporating the other projects into this site. All in all, I'm excited to learn about all the uses of photography in instruction.
