Visual Storeytelling:
This video will focus on healthy bee keeping and how the use of pesticides effect our bee population. If our natural pollinators are eliminated, our food sources would be left with crops that are self-pollinating like corn and wheat. We can hand pollinate some vegetables, however the time involved in that process is great. “A photo essay, in its simplest form, is a series of pictures that evokes an emotion, presents an idea or helps tell a story” (Mielke, 2015).

“Bee Wise, Bee Aware, Bee Smart: Save the Bees”
Honey bees are an important insect that we should all be aware of and help protect. Honey bees pollinate 70% of the worlds food, so without honey bees, our food sources would be rather bland and not as nutritional as they should be. Bees are essential to maintaining a healthy life style as well as providing pollination services to our crops, farms, and back yard gardens.
In the last 20 years, there has been a world-wide decline of bees. This loss has been averaging 40-50% each year, with many bee keepers, commercial and hobbyist, buying and raising more colonies each spring. Bee keeper’s encounter many challenges to keep their bees thriving and doing well. These challenges range from pests, mites, pesticides and yes, even bears and skunks! Some of these challenges are compliments of Mother Nature and some are from us. All of these “challenges” create obstacles that contribute to the decline of honey bees. People can create many issues for our honey bees, and these range from insecticides and pesticides.
This video is meant to be more of an educational tool that will focus on foods that we love thanks to our pollinators, and foods that we would have if our honey bee population declines to the point where our food supply changes. This video will also touch on the beginning journey of the honey bee and the world the foraging bee journeys to gather food for the colony. The foragers are the bees who are in most danger and are susceptible to gathering pollen and nectar that has been contaminated by pesticides.
This video will also show the devastation that can happen when people are careless and don’t follow proper protocol when applying pesticides. Specifically, Dorchester County in SC, did an aerial spray recently to kill mosquitoes which have been spreading the Zika virus and other diseases which are spread by mosquitoes. However, the county failed to make this public knowledge or inform the SC Bee Keepers Association to allow enough time for the registered bee keepers to be notified. If these Keepers would have been notified, there are precautions that can be taken ahead of the spraying to protect the bees. Unfortunately, the county did not follow protocol, and killed millions of honey bees and at the same time destroying many Keepers who use this as their agricultural crop and lively hood. This was a very sad day in SC among those who love, take care of and cherish our pretty honey bees.
