Figures vs. Background
Figure verses background, or otherwise known as “Figure to Ground” style in photography, is where you use lightening techniques to highlight your figure against the background. This can mean by using lights, or a natural light that has contrast. This could also mean a figure or your image with a back drop that is in contrast with the figure. Adam Marelli states, “Figure to ground allows your brain to determine shapes, sizes, distance and other optical illusions that exist in photography” (Marelli, 2016).
