Contrast
Contrast or opposing qualities can give an image a stunning look as well as give that “wow” look the photographer may be trying to achieve. Contrast comes in all shapes and forms as well. You can have contrasting textures such as smooth and rough; colors such as black and white; lines with angles and perpendicular lines; and even value where you have darker or light values to create contrast.
The images below, show contrast in several different ways. The sunrise shows contrast with the lighter value of the sky and the darker value of the water, including the darker contrast of the trees against the sky. The sunset below, shows sharp contrast in the various colors from the blues in the sky to the bright gold of the sun, to the reflection on the water. The flower shows contrast with the color of the flower against the darkness of the night. While below, the sky and the trees show contrast with the light and sky colors behind the trees. All of the images show a different type of contrast. |
