Step-by-step Procedure
Agenda:
I. 8:00 am - Registration
There are many opportunities throughout this workshop for interactive collaboration. Starting about mid-morning on when the participants are grouped into teams, collaboration will begin. Team will collaborate on their subject/topic and gather images by taking them or by gathers supplemental images from the internet.
Hands-on Activities
There is allotted time for participants to learn GIMP, which is a free image editor and will cover the basics. There will also be hands on activities for taking photographs, as well as assembling the images into a story. Participants can either use PowerPoint to assemble the images into a story with transitions and animation, or they can use Windows Live Movie Maker if they are looking to learn a different technology other than PPT.
Assessment of participatory/collaborative learning
There will be formative assessment along the way through all of the presentations and hands-on learning activities from photo editing to assembling the movie. The facilitator will need to checking on each team and assisting them as needed. The facilitator will also be able to help guide the teams technically if they get stuck on a particular tasks within any of the applications.
The summative assessment will be each team’s presentation of their graphical documentary. Each team will be expected to showcase a beginning, a middle and an end to their story and be able to discuss the purpose after their sharing of the video/movie. Each team will be expected to answer any questions on their project to their peer participants as well as talk about how they will use this in their own subject areas with their students.
Step-by-step Procedure
Agenda:
I. 8:00 am - Registration
- Registration will take place where each attendee will receive a name-tag and a folder;
- Attendee will have brought a laptop, and a device to take pictures with;
- Attendee can enjoy coffee and water as needed
- Facilitator will welcome the attendees and introduce him/herself;
- Facilitator will engage participants in an icebreaker game as part of the participants introducing themselves. (Name, subject matter, hometown, hobby, etc.)
- Facilitator will ask participants what their idea of a graphical documentary is.
- Facilitator will play the Youtube video: Documentary Photography with Paccarik Orue, followed by a brief discussion.
- Facilitator will play the TEDx Talk video “Two views in documentary Photography by Billy Weeks. (14 minutes) Followed by a more in-depth discussion in regards to how a graphical documentary can be used in their subjects to engage students.
- Facilitator will engage participants in learning the elements and principles by reviewing this PowerPoint of 59 slides with multiple images that exemplify each.
- Facilitator will break participants out into teams and each will decide on a social issue they feel is relevant to their project of their choice.
- Participate will collaborate with each other to take and gather images that will work to tell a story for their project.
- If participants do not have enough time to fully capture images due to restrictions or availabilities for their objects/subjects, they can search the internet to gather some images that will help tell their story. (The preference is for participants to take their own image, however time may not permit this.)
- Facilitator will guild participants on making sure their images are loaded in their laptop and they have a photo editor (like Photoshop or GIMP which is free).
- Facilitator will introduce faculty to GIMP, which is a free open source photo editor. This will be very basic editing skills such as cropping, scaling, and color/b&w/sepia tones.
- Facilitator will also ask participants to think about an order for their images, and introduce the concept of a storyboard to them. (template is included in PPT)
- Participants can break and get lunch, or have a working lunch if they choose to continue working on their photos.
- Movie time – the facilitator will collaborate do a brief demonstration on how to work with a storyboard. The story board PPT template is a tool for the participants to use to organize their photos and create their story.
- Facilitator will demonstrate to faculty how they can do create a movie with just the images in PPT using transitions and animations.
- For those who are interested in using Windows Live Movie Maker there are also resources available for the facilitator to show to the participants.
- This time will be collaboration time for participants to create their graphics documentary while the facilitator visits with each team to help them as needed and offer ideas. This collaboration time will be very hands-on.
- A short health break and to prepare for sharing.
- Facilitator will ask each team to share their graphical documentary. Each team will show their final project, then talk about their rationale behind it and lessons learned.
- Each team will have several minutes to share and discuss – facilitator can adjust as needed for time allowances.
- Facilitator will pass out the evaluation forms and ask that all participants complete the evaluation and leave with the assistant at the back of the room or at the exit.
- Facilitator will sum up and conclude the workshop with final thoughts.
